Steel Dust Recycling is our newest plant in the United States dedicated to the recovery of industrial zinc and lead waste. This plant recycles Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel dust using Waelz Kiln technology.

EAF dust generated by steel mills contains zinc. The new SDR plant specializes in the recovery of zinc and other metals from this dust. The main product of SDR is Waelz Oxide, also known as Crude Zinc Oxide (CZO). This product is transformed into zinc oxide, zinc sulfate or metallic zinc through zinc smelting. Our plant also produces Waelz Iron Product (WIP), an iron concentrate..

As of October 1st, 2009, SDR became part of Grupo PROMAX, the group that owns Zinc Nacional, which has more than 30 years of experience in recycling EAF dust.

Zinc Nacional, founded in 1952, is a private company dedicated to the production of zinc compounds and recycled cardboard. The main objective of this acquisition is to allow Zinc Nacional, with the inclusion of SDR, to provide a closer service to the steel industry in the United States, while also providing more zinc units for the production of zinc oxide and zinc sulfate in its facilities in Monterrey, Mexico.

The SDR Alabama plant can process more than 240,000 tons of EAF dust annually.

The SDR plant uses Waelz furnaces to obtain zinc and other materials from EAF dust. While not a new technology, the Waelz Process is the main metal recovery process, which has also proven to be economically viable for processing industrial waste.

Our plant consists of facilities where EAF dust is conditioned, mixed and granulated for processing, a Waelz furnace for processing steel mill dust, storage and loading facilities for product sales, as well as the latest environmental control systems. Our plant is located on 66 acres near Millport, Alabama; with direct access to 4 major railroads and multiple interstate highways.

Developed in 1910, the Waelz furnace is a proven technology for high temperature metal recovery (HTMR) from EAF waste. The result is highly concentrated zinc oxides that are used as raw materials for zinc smelting. While many other technologies have been successfully tested for the treatment of steel dust, none has proven to be as economically feasible as the Waelz furnace process, which remains the best available technology proven for steel dust recycling.

Steel Dust Recycling will accept and process steel plant flue dust from steel melt shops with EAF furnaces (EAF baghouse dust needs to contain zinc in a quantity acceptable for processing). The baghouse dust must be transported in covered hopper bottom rail cars or in Pressure Differential rail cars or trucks.
